Decorative Herbal Planters
Descriptions of the herbs I use in these planters:
Artemisia - Leaves & sprigs are said to treat intestinal parasites & as insect repellent. Leaves are good for pressing.
Chocolate Mint - Great as a tea mixed with black tea or alone, and also with strawberries, chocolate desserts, and breakfast breads.
Green Sedum - Not a traditional herb, but this plant is a beautiful ground cover with yellow flowers in spring. Nice in rock gardens too.
Lemon Balm -- Flavoring in ice cream & herbal teas, sometimes combined with spearmint. Fruit dishes or candies; fish dishes; lemon balm pesto. May be a
preservative in sausages.
Lime Thyme – use in poultry dishes and anytime you want a citrus flavor.
Peppermint - may help to enhance memory, settle upset stomach, ease symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Good aphid repellant, & it smells great!
Pineapple Mint – variegation adds interesting color to dishes, also use for citrus flavor.
Purple Sage – flavoring & coloring in beef dishes, vegetables, salads, omelets, fritters, soups, yeast breads, marinades, meat pies, and poultry stuffing.
Rue - Cough syrup ingredient (Brazil), ointment for external use for gout, rheumatism, and sciatica. Caution: Large doses can cause mild poisoning.
Russian Sage - not edible, but lovely in dried flower arrangements, wreaths, etc. In its native countries of eastern Europe, it has medicinal uses as well.
Thyme - Mediterranean, Italian & Provençal French cuisines. Lamb, eggs, & tomatoes; soups, stews, stocks and sauces.
Variegated Oregano - Tomato, egg & cheese dishes; meat or poultry stuffings; on pork, lamb, chicken and fish. Chili powder. Italian, Greek and Mexican dishes.
NOTE: Unless noted, all plants will thrive if set into garden and are winter hardy. Keep these herbs clipped to make them full and pretty.
