Rue is grown as an ornamental plant because of its bluish leaves, both as a low hedge and for use in nosegays. Most cats dislike the smell of it. It tolerates hot and dry soil conditions. It can be used medicinally, since the chemicals in rue help decrease muscle contractions and reduce inflammation. Occasionally it is also used as an insect repellent. Rue can be used sparingly as a condiment, but it is incredibly bitter, not suiting modern tastes. Sometimes it causes severe gastric discomfort.
