Summer Blooming Plants
FOR MOSTLY SUNNY SPOTS
Just about all the perennials bloom during some part of the summer, from June through August. Many continue to bloom for several months in spring and summer, and I've listed those on pages for both seasons, for your convenience. More detailed descriptions of this group of perennials can be found on the spring pages.
Following the spring/summer flowering group of perennials on this page, you will find some that begin to bloom in summer, and in most cases, continue to bloom on into the fall.

Balloon flower has 2- to 3-inch cuplike blossoms, with buds swelling before their starry petals unfold. Excellent cut flowers. Seldom bothered by insects, and are very cold-hardy. |
Threadleaf Coreopsis, 2 ft tall, is good for container gardens, xeriscaping, cottage garden, native prairie, or informal border. The blossoms last a long time in water. |
Long-lasting large 2", semi-double to double canary-yellow flowers. This compact, well-branched 12" coreopsis is ideal for containers or border edges, & cutting. |
Coneflowers are shaped like Black-Eyed Susan's with sturdy orange-bronze cones and brightly colored petals. They do best in full sun but will take some shade. Best if used in borders, meadows, butterfly gardens, masses, small gardens, and containers. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter and, if flower heads are not removed, are often visited by goldfinches who feed on the seeds.
Gaura plants bloom for many weeks, with loose sprays of flowers in shades of white & pink which move constantly, looking like a cloud of small butterflies. Plants flower for the entire summer and fall. Superb in containers, the subtle color blends easily in borders. Drought tolerant once established. |
False aster blooms from late summer into the fall for about 1 month. Grow in wet to moist conditions, and a fertile loamy soil. |
